From the Curator A Tribute to the Kerlan Friends Kerlan Friends have supported the Kerlan Collection informally between 1974 and 1989 and then formally since the ByLaws were established in 1989. During the informal period and since then, volunteers served on the 25th Kerlan Collection Anniversary and the Kerlan Award Committees. Minnesota foundations--The F. R. Bigelow Foundation, Carolyn Foundation, General Mills Foundation, General Services Foundation, Grotto Foundation, Lutheran Brotherhood Foundation, Minnesota Humanities Commission, Minnesota State Arts Council, Ruth Mott Fund, and the Saint Paul Foundation--supported projects since 1973. The major volunteer projects beginning in 1974 focused on the annual Kerlan Award, to expand and publicize the Kerlan Friends, to create and sell greeting cards, and to publish a newsletter. Diana Swanson as a volunteer produced a video This is the Kerlan Collection with a grant from the Sven and C. Emil Berglund Foundation, it continues to be loaned to schools. Portfolios of facsimiles were assembled to loan to greater Minnesota area so youngsters could view the writing and illustrating processes. Under each president since officers were established, there has been a new initiative along with continuation of previous projects. Marilyn Hobbs from Maplewood, 89-91, put the by-laws into action by organizing committees and conducting Board and Annual meetings. Holly Ramsey created a poster and with Susan Stan produced a membership flyer. Karen Carlson from Hastings, 91-93, proposed a stand-alone program with author or artist speaker for members only in conjunction with the annual meeting, expanded membership further, and launched an annual fund. Irvyn Gilbertson 93-95 from Bloomington, including the 45th anniversary year, implemented the Kerlan Essay Award for an outstanding paper written during the preceding school year using unique resources in the collection, proposed and financed by Edward B. Stanford. Jerry Barnaby from Eagan-Eden Prairie, 95-97, who had chaired the successful Silent Auction at the Minnesota History Center, developed an annual budget and proposed that the proceeds be placed in the University Foundation Quasi/ Invested Fund for Conservation Rebecca Rapport from Bloomington, 97-99, orchestrated the First Annual Celebration of New Resources, a selection of acquisitions after the Friends annual meeting and appointed Elizabeth Peterson to develop a new format for the newsletter Bette Peltola from Richfield, 99-01, including the 50th anniversary year and special designated gifts, appointed Ruth Berman as editor of Kerlan Awards 1975-2001 and shepherded it through to publication, party, and sales. Karen Bihrle from Osseo, 01-03, extended the Kerlan Friends presence at the Celebration of Children's Books, now an annual event, at Anderson Center in Red Wing in September, and encouraged Norma Gaffron and her committee to propose new images for greeting cards. Nancy Hof from Stillwater, 03-05, hosted the kick-off fall board meeting in her home and promoted the Kerlan Friends table and program at the Landmark Center the afternoon of the Minnesota Book Awards in April in the 55th anniversary year. Kerlan Friend Darlys Nelson and volunteer Karen Bauer at the 2004 Minnesota Book Awards at Landmark Center. Historians Marilyn Hobbs, Helen George and Sally Kaiser and now Kathy Howe assembled and preserved examples of publications, greeting cards and keepsakes, along with board and annual meeting minutes, for the archive. We are grateful to the remarkable leadership of these Presidents. Together with their Boards and the membership, we thank the Kerlan Friends for their dedicated and competent volunteer effort, hours, and spirit. --Karen Nelson Hoyle, Curator |
Coming Events Scandinavian Treasures in Children's Literature The high literacy rate and progressive social attitudes of the Scandinavian
countries are legendary. Perhaps it is because these values are introduced
to children from the earliest ages through delightfully provocative books.
In this course, participants will examine the stunning achievements of
Scandinavian children's literature and view an exhibition of drawings
by Swedish book illustrator Ilon Wikland. Wikland is best known for her
illustrations of books by Astrid Lindgren, including Christmas at
Bullerby, Mio My Mio, The Brothers Lionheart, The Children of Noisy Village,
The
Dragon with Red Eyes, and Lotta's Bike, among other titles. In addition,
they will peruse and discuss the remarkable materials in the Kerlan Collection
as a means to discover the historical roots of and contemporary trends
in Scandinavian children's literature. Offered in conjunction with the
exhibit "The Art of Ilon Wikland" at the American Swedish Institute,
June-October 2004. The first two sessions meet at the American Swedish
Institute; the last session will be at the Kerlan Collection, Elmer L.
Andersen Library, Room 113, West Bank Campus. Offered in cooperation
with the American Swedish Institute. Cover Art for Happy Times in Noisy Village
